Oil Palm

The oil palm (Elaeis guineensis) belongs to the palm family, Arecaceae. The genus Elaeis includes only two species: the African oil palm (E. guineensis) and the American oil palm (E. oleifera). The African species is of great economic importance, as its fruits are used to produce palm oil and palm kernel oil. The oil palm is native to the coastal regions of equatorial West Africa. Today, it is widely cultivated in tropical countries, particularly in Malaysia, Indonesia, and other regions. Economic Importance In addition to oil production—palm oil from the fruit pulp and palm kernel oil from the seeds—the plant has several other uses: The fruits can be eaten raw or roasted.
